These are not my own words, but something that stuck with me from a pod called The Zen Thinking Podcast
Comparing mindfulness in regards to anger; is the way a mother is to a crying baby[edit | edit source]
Your mind is the empty room.
The crying baby is the anger.
And the the mother, who picks up the crying baby who is frantic and upset and in pain – The Mother is your mindfulness, holding and nurturing it and lulling it, calming the anger.
You don't have to give in to anger when it arises within you. If you meet it with a different sensation, if you see it and you feel it, you can embrace it with - not the same energy, but with its opposite energy. Then it calms it right down and it eventually flutters away.
